Themes and Requests

We set themes for each issue in the form of a prompt. Our prompts may be a single word, phrase or even a photo that provides a writer with an idea around which to focus their story. Use of the prompt may be literal, but doesn’t have to be. In fact, we will enjoy seeing where potential Pique authors take our very basic prompts.

An example may be: Orange. This prompt could be easily interpreted as a color or a fruit. Or, it could even refer to the Dutch House of Orange. It might have you writing a story about an orange grove, or the school colors of a character’s alma mater. Let our prompts lead you where they may, but remember to read all of our guidelines before submitting.

Upcoming Prompts are:

May 2013: Traveling
Submissions Due April 14

We challenge you to think far and wide when considering this issue’s prompt. We’d really hate to end up with seven road trip stories in the next issue. Following are some quotes that may get your juices flowing (wink, wink). And remember, life begins at the end of your comfort zone.

“For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

“To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.” – Freya Stark

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” – Marcel Proust

“When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.” – Susan Heller

“I have wandered all my life, and I have also traveled; the difference between the two being this, that we wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfillment.” – Hilaire Belloc

“The cool thing about being famous is traveling. I have always wanted to travel across seas, like to Canada and stuff.” – Britney Spears

August 2013: to come
